Transitional Housing Retreat Space/Office
construction completed 2010
While in grad school, Miami University hired me to instruct their DesignBuild Summer Studio in Over-the-Rhine while the normal instructor was on leave for the birth of his first child. In this position I led undergraduate and graduate level architecture students through the studio that took them from schematic design to construction drawings and permitting and required them to do all demolition of old and construction of new elements in the space. We also had to coordinate with skilled trades contractors for some of the electrical, plumbing and masonry works required.
The space is on the top floor of a housing development for persons just out of a homeless shelter and drug rehab. After meeting with stakeholders we converted the space to an office for the onsite social worker and a retreat area for residents complete with a roof top deck and a small kitchenette for event support. The students also designed a conference table that can be split and pushed against the walls for food service and other uses. All work for the 600 sf space was designed and completed by the architecture students with my oversight.
