School Project turned into Reality

design completed 2006

construction completed 2008

While studying interior design at Sinclair Community College, I was tasked with redesigning the kitchen in my home. Two years later I was able to implement the design with only minor changes.

The home was one of two prototype all steel "Tech Built" homes that then Armco Steel commissioned architect Karl Koch to design. Built in 1963, the home had a very mid-century modern feel. Given the home's lineage, I wanted to keep as close as possible to to the original design intent while updating materials and bringing the space into the 21st century.

I was able to keep the budget minimal by retaining the location of existing plumbing, using standard cabinet measurements and by doing all the work myself. Although this was not my first time rehabbing a space, it was my first project seen through from schematics all the way to completion. The success of this project inspired me to further my design education and seek a bachelor and eventually a master's degree in architecture.
